Assisting people serving sentences is an important part of our work. It's especially important for them to feel that their questions and concerns are being addressed, that they have the opportunity to receive qualified legal advice and protection of their rights.
Today, we held a Legal Aid Day for convicts at the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan via videoconference.
Representatives from the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan, the Ministry of Justice of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan, the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Tatarstan, and the Federal Penitentiary Service's Medical Unit No. 16 also participated in the consultation.
Six people serving sentences at Correctional Colonies No. 8 and No. 10 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan asked questions. The topics of their requests concerned the commutation of the unserved portion of their sentence to a more lenient sentence, provision of housing after release (for those considered orphans), challenging a court decision regarding the undesirability of their stay in the Russian Federation, and assistance related to difficult life situations.
All applicants received the necessary clarifications within the framework of current legislation. It is fundamental to us that the rights and interests of every person are protected, regardless of their status or life situation.
