Today, I participated via videoconference in the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Penitentiary and Post-Penitentiary Resocialization of Convicts: Problems and Prospects", organized by the Vladimir Law Institute of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia.
During my presentation, I spoke to colleagues about a unique project being implemented in the Republic of Tatarstan to provide psychological correction to convicts suffering from psychoactive and narcotic substance addiction. Since 2018, the program has been operating in penal colonies No. 2 and No. 19 and is aimed at cessation of drug and alcohol use, fostering motivation for rehabilitation, and returning individuals to a full life in society.
The project is being implemented jointly with the Kazan public organization for relatives of drug addicts "Vera," the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan, Medical Unit No. 16, and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tatarstan. In 2026, new rehabilitation units are planned to open at Pretrial Detention Facility No. 1 and Penal Colony No. 5.
It is especially important that the work done is yielding tangible results. To date, nearly 200 individuals who have completed rehabilitation have already been released from prison. A significant portion of them have maintained stable remission, and many have been able to completely change their lives and abandon their former addictions.
I also shared our experience implementing probation programs in Tatarstan. Today, five probation centers are successfully operating in the republic, providing assistance to citizens after their release from prison.
Effective resocialization of convicted individuals is a crucial condition for preventing recidivism and returning them to a full life in society!
