The appeal was resolved positively!

We recently received a complaint from a Kazan resident, Ms. A., regarding a violation of her right to an extended visit with inmate K., who is serving a sentence at Federal Correctional Institution IK-19 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan. According to the complainant, inmate K. is her common-law husband.

In her complaint, the complainant stated that the correctional facility administration had denied her an extended visit due to her lack of a registered marriage. She also expressed concern about the conditions of detention and the health of her common-law husband.

To protect the complainant's rights and verify the arguments presented, we contacted the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Tatarstan. During the prosecutor's investigation, it was established that the Privolzhsky District Court of Kazan had previously ruled the actions of the correctional facility's warden unlawful, requiring a reconsideration of the requests for an extended visit. However, these court decisions were not promptly implemented.

Due to the violations identified, the Kazan Prosecutor's Office for Supervision of Law Enforcement in Correctional Institutions filed a complaint with the warden of the correctional colony. Following the measures taken, the complainant's right to a long visit with her common-law spouse was restored, and the meeting took place.

Protecting citizens' rights, including in prisons, remains an important part of the work of the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner in the Republic of Tatarstan!
