Within the framework of the cooperation provided for in the Memorandum of Understanding between UNHCR in Russia and the Ombudsman in the Russian Federation, a seminar was organized in Nizhny Novgorod on 4 July «Activities of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, principles and standards of work with refugees and displaced persons».
The purpose of the seminar is to familiarize Russian state human rights defenders with the UNHCR mandate, the Agency’s activities in Russia and globally. During the event, issues related to the principles of work and communication with refugees and forcibly displaced persons were discussed. Special attention was paid to identifying high-risk individuals and addressing the needs of applicants with special needs.
The past year has shown how difficult and painstaking it is to work with internally displaced persons. As the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Tatarstan, I was fully involved in work with IDPs from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Donetsk People’s Republic and Ukraine: we hosted receptions of citizens, dealt with the problems faced by people who came to our republic. To this day, I receive appeals on various domestic issues: some do not receive a pension, some are faced with the problem of receiving social benefits, many questions - we try to help.
