Meeting of the Expert Council under the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation

The Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Tatarstan Sariya Saburskaya took part in the meeting of the Expert Council under the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation

On February 7, meeting of the Expert Council under the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation was held for the first time in 2018.

Leading human rights defenders and lawyers of Russia gathered under the chairmanship of the federal ombudsperson.

In her welcoming speech, High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova thanked members of the Expert Council for cooperation and assistance in all areas of the High Commissioner’s activity − targeted assistance to people, lawmaking and scientific activity, human rights and freedoms education.

"Due to our collaboration in the work of the Expert Council sections we succeeded to do a lot of useful, good and necessary deeds to protect human and civil rights and freedoms," Tatiana Moskalkova said.

Chief of Staff of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Ivan Solovyov told about main directions of sections and provided the concept of the Expert Council activity for the current year.

"14 meetings of sections and 3 meetings of the Advisory and Human Rights Group were held in 2017," Ivan Solovyov noticed.

He also noted that during the previous year the staff of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in collaboration with members of the Expert Council worked on different directions: targeted assistance to citizens, legislation improvement, development of human rights education programs, development of international cooperation.

"This year is the year of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 25th anniversary of the Constitution. These two events will be «guiding stars» in our activity," Ivan Solovyov declared, presenting the plan of the Expert Council activities for 2018.

In addition, in the course of the meeting Tatiana Moskalkova first announced the provisions of the Annual 2017 Report on the activity of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation.

In conclusion, the High Commissioner thanked members of the Expert Council for significant assistance in solution of complicated current and future problems facing the human rights community.

"Thank you for constructive assistance, the country really needs it. Together we actually moved many issues on a deeper level," Tatiana Moskalkova said.

Recall that the main objectives of the Expert Council are the development of recommendations on implementation of the High Commissioner’s main activities, consultative support and informing the institution of the state human rights defender on the state of affairs in the field of implementation and protection of human rights and freedoms, assistance to the High Commissioner in collaboration with government bodies and civil society institutions.
